PS I Love You Day

Kindness…Pass it on.

My name is Giavanna Verdi, and I am currently a senior at Shoreham-Wading River High School.  Right now, I am bringing an important event to each school in the SWR school district, called P.S. I Love You Day.

As a sophomore, I was chosen by my guidance counselor to attend a leadership conference at Adelphi University.  The Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Conference is a weekend-long seminar where sophomores in high school from the tri-state area get together to make a difference in the world.  I have attended HOBY for two consecutive years, once as an ambassador and once selected as a junior counselor, and plan to further my participation in HOBY.  Meeting the creator of P.S. I Love You Day, Brooke DiPalma, a day dedicated to her father, who committed suicide, motivated me to organize the first-ever P.S. I Love You Day, on February 8, 2013, to Shoreham-Wading River High School.  This day is to encourage and inspire high school students all over the country and world to give rise to ending suicide, bullying and depression.  This event influenced students and faculty to not only support the Long Island Crisis Center for suicide and bullying prevention with their donations, but also write positive notes and quotes to inspire those who needed that "extra-boost" of happiness in his/her day.  P.S. I Love You Day is now a yearly event brought by me thanks to Mr. Dan Holtzman, Principal of Shoreham-Wading River High School.

From February 3 to February 7, 2014, P.S. I Love You Day will occur in each school, including students from grades kindergarten to twelfth.  In the middle school specifically, with help of the members of the National Junior Honor Society (which I was a member of), there will be pencils and bracelets for sale, and the money from those sales will be donated to the Long Island Crisis Center and possibly another suicide and bullying prevention organization nearby.  In addition to a donation of simply $1, you will receive a purple heart-shaped card to write or draw something that makes him/her feel happy; it can be a quote, a word, a sentence or a picture.  I will collect them on February 7th after school, and then display the cards in the shape of a heart for each advisory, and each will be hung around the school during the week of Valentine’s Day; a week of peace, kindness and of course, love.  I was informed by Brooke that PS I Love You Day will be celebrated on February 14, 2014 (also Valentine’s Day), and I am encouraging the entire school district to wear purple to honor this event.

Thank you in advance for participation and consideration of this significant event!

P.S. … I Love You!

ABOUT US

This is me, Giavanna Verdi, at last year's PS I Love You Day.  February 8, 2013 marked the first annual PS I Love You Day at Shoreham-Wading River High School.  On PS I Love You Day, students and faculty members had the opportunity to receive a purple card to write something positive or something that makes his/her happy for others to see.  Students and faculty members who donated to PS I Love You Day received a purple ribbon to spread the awareness.  I collected $181 in donations, throughout only one school day.  The money I collected went to the Long Island Crisis Center in Bellmore.
